HELP
This year has gotten off the ground with a BANG.  Lots of things happening and going on all at the same time.  During the summer, the scouts planned many terrific outings and trips.  Many of the scouts are involved with a lot of school as well as after school activities.  Some of our well-planned trips have not gone on so well.  We cancelled the overnight a Gries Park after the Lynbrook Expo because only one scout was planning on attending.  The second trip was the All Faith Scout Retreat.  Three scouts attended.  The third trip was the Philadelphia Histroic Trails in Pennsylvania.  That was cancelled because only 2 scouts signed up and paid.  The next trip is the "Clean-the-Chapel" weekend and the signup for that is very slow.  I must remind the parents that in order for a scout to advance, he must attend at least 'one' planned troop outing within 90 days of his Scoutmaster Conference.  I must also remind the parents that it was the boys in the troop that planned these overnight camping and hiking activities.  I, as well as a few other leaders have set aside these weekends so we can go out with the troop, but the lack of participation has caused all these plans to be in limbo.   It must also be mentioned that I cannot attend every outing and that the troop committee encourages parents participation in these camping, hiking and service outings.  I don't think it would be too much to ask that one adult from each scouting family attend one outing a year with their scouts.  It is important.  And it is also important that the parents encourage the scouts to attend these outings.  I have been camping with the scouts for over 35 years and I could use a bit of help.  If there are too many planned overnights, maybe we could cut back, but....... Since July, only three scouts have spent one night each camping, I can't see that as a remedy.  I would encourage every scout to get into the spirit of Scouting.  If anyone would like to discuss this with me, I am usually available before the troop meetings at 7:30.
